Phlegethon

Phlegethon

Phlegethon (Phleg´ethon). A river of fire in the infernal regions. It was the picture of desolation, for nothing could grow on its parched and withered banks. Also called Pyriphlegethon.

“… Infernal rivers …
… Fierce Phlegethon,
Whose waves of torrent fire inflame with rage.”

Milton
