Cophetua

Cophetua (Cophe´tua). A legendary king of Africa, who disliked women, but ultimately fell in love with a “beggar-maid,” as mentioned in Romeo and Juliet.

“… Cupid, he that shot so trim
When King Cophetua loved the beggar-maid.”
